Mendell Court celebrates opening
Residents of Mendell Court in Bromborough have celebrated the official opening of the extra care scheme for older people. Joining them to mark the occasion were Professor Helen Carty, the High Sheriff of Merseyside and Howard Cooper CBE, Director of Adult Social Care with Wirral Council, who presented a commemorative plaque to 76 year old Mrs Olive Lynch.
Developed through a partnership between Housing 21, Wirral Council, NHS Wirral, the Department of Health and Cruden Construction, Mendell Court provides 49 one and two bedroom apartments for independent living along with 24 hour on-site care.
Guests at the opening of the £5.7 million development were treated to a performance of songs by the residents and heard how they have benefitted from the move to Mendell Court. They also toured the on-site community facilities, which include a hairdressing salon, healthcare room and restaurant.
Jane Hinde, regional services director for Housing 21 said: “We are delighted to be celebrating the official opening Mendell Court, Housing 21’s fourth extra care scheme in Wirral. This is an excellent scheme that allows residents to continue enjoying independent living in a safe and comfortable environment.”
Mendell Court includes options for rent and for purchase on a shared ownership basis. The scheme has been built on the site of the former Mendell Lodge residential care home.
Cllr Anne McArdle, Wirral’s Cabinet Member for Social Care and Inclusion, said: ‘We are delighted to have been working with Housing 21, NHS Wirral, the Department of Health and Cruden Construction on this project.
‘It will provide older people locally with the care and support that they need – and the privacy of their own front door. There is increasing demand for this kind of high-quality accommodation and increased choice and independence for older people and we’re looking to provide more of this modern and secure housing for people who want to live independently but have support when it is needed.’
Kathy Doran, chief executive of NHS Wirral said: “NHS Wirral is delighted to be part of this scheme, which allows older people the opportunity to access housing that will enable them to maintain their independence, while also being offered 24 hour on site support for peace of mind.”
Alan Davies, managing director of Cruden Construction, added: “Cruden Construction has been a partner contractor to Housing 21 for over seven years, delivering six high quality extra care facilities in the North West. Mendell Court is no exception to the high quality delivered through our partnership with Housing 21 and this outstanding quality will shortly be celebrated with Mendell Court’s nomination in the 2012 North West Building Excellence Awards”
