New development in St Albans
Leacroft in Common Lane, Harpenden is to be redeveloped into the first affordable flexi-care (extra care) housing scheme in St Albans District following the grant of planning permission.
The site is currently owned by St Albans City and District Council and is being redeveloped by Housing 21, a national provider of care and support.
It will provide 21 one-bedroom and 17 two-bedroom flats, together with communal facilities, for older people with care needs. Flexi-care housing schemes help people continue to live independently by providing them with care and support tailored to their needs.
Housing 21 will shortly be taking ownership of the site. The Council retains the right to nominate residents from the housing register to live at the development.
Cllr Brian Ellis, Portfolio Holder for Housing at St Albans City and District Council, said: “Leacroft will be the first in a number of new flexi-care facilities we are planning in the District. This facility will have an onsite team who will support the care needs of residents. This means residents will be able to stay in their homes even when their care needs increase. We expect that this kind of accommodation will mainly be taken up by older people with care needs and an average age of around 80 years.”
Julia Godwin, Development Programme Manager for Housing 21, said: "We're delighted to be working in partnership with St Albans City and District Council and Hertfordshire County Council on this exciting new flexi-care scheme for older people in Harpenden. We're sure it will be a valuable asset to the local community."
