Show flat opened at Portsmouth extra care scheme
A show apartment at a new Housing 21 extra care housing scheme for older people in Portsmouth has been officially opened. Representatives of Housing 21 and Portsmouth City Council were joined by prospective residents when they celebrated the key milestone in the scheme’s development by cutting a ribbon at Caroline Square in King William Street, Portsea.
Due for completion in November, Caroline Square will provide 43, one and two bedroom apartments for affordable rent. The development will also provide residents with a communal lounge, dining room, hair salon and laundry room.
Simon Bostock, Regional Operations Director for Housing 21 said: “We’re delighted to reach this key milestone and I’m sure anyone viewing the show apartment will be very impressed with its space and quality. Extra care is an increasingly popular choice for older people wishing to remain independent in their own homes.”
The new development is being built by a partnership of Portsmouth City Council, Housing 21 and Leadbitter, a subsidiary of Bouygues UK. The £4.4 million development is supported with investment from the Homes and Communities Agency.
Cllr Leo Madden, the council's Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, said: "We want to improve the care we provide for older people, and help them to maintain their independence for as long as possible. Demand for more traditional residential care is falling and the time is right to provide extra-care flats, which give older people more privacy and independence."
Extra-care apartments are designed to enable older people and adults with physical disabilities to stay independent in their own homes for as long as possible, with 24 hour support on hand should they need it.
Mikel Berrebi, Regional Director of Bouygues UK’s Housing Central team said: “The show apartment gives potential residents a preview of this excellent new development, which will provide secure and comfortable homes for older people for many years to come.”
Residents will benefit from a secure door entry system with intercom to every apartment, a court manager service and an emergency call system.
